Lifelong Resident of Madison County Dies at Winterset Home
Mrs. Lavina Schoenenberger, a lifelong resident of Madison county died at her home on West Court avenue Monday morning, May 30th. Mrs. Schoenenberger would have been 76 years of age, had she lived until May 31st, and on Sunday, her four sons and their families, had a birthday dinner for her, at her home. She has been in failing health for several months, but she was able to be up on Sunday, and enjoyed the dinner given for her.
She did not feel well, Monday morning, when she got up, so summoned her son, Dr. J. G. Schoenenberger, who lives nearby. Death came a short time later.
The Rev. A. P. Keast, pastor of the Methodist church conducted her funeral services at the Ramsey-Richards funeral home, Wednesday afternoon, June first, at 1:30 o'clock, and burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
Mrs. Schoenenberger was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Travis. She was married to John Schoenenberger, May 10, 1875, and they made their home on a farm in Walnut township, for many years. They both took an active interest in the affairs of the community, Mr. Schoenenberger serving as state representative from this county, at one time.
Following his death in 1915, Mrs. Schoenenberger purchased the house on west Court avenue, that has since been her home. She affiliated with the Methodist church and was a member of Eastern Star and the Columbian club.
Mrs. Schoenenberger spent much of her time in her garden and her flowers were the prettiest in Winterset. She was happy in her garden and with her family and friends.
They were the parents of five children, all of whom survive the mother: the daughter, Mrs. H. C. Madden of Omaha, who had planned to come on her mother's birthday, for a visit of several weeks; and four sons, Ralph of Marshalltown, Ivor of Clarinda and Walter and Dr. J. G. Schoenenberger of Winterset. She also leaves eleven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two sisters and two brothers. Four grandsons and two nephews, served as pallbearers. Many friends and neighbors of the Peru neighborhood drove here to attend the funeral services.

Lavina Caroline Travis was born to Martin B. and Lavina Caroline Travis May 31, 1856, on a farm near Peru, and died at her home in Winterset, May 30, 1932. Her girlhood was spent at home until her marriage to John Schoenenberger at the age of 18. They lived together at their country home eight miles north of Winterset from 1876 to 1915, where they raised their family of five children, all of whom are living. Since her widowhood Mrs. Schoenenberger has lived in Winterset, where she devoted her time and interest to her beautiful flower garden. A number of flowers from her garden were made into a large spray by Mrs. Harry Hays, and were placed on her casket. She has been a life-long member of the Methodist church and an active participant in the Eastern Star lodge.
Two sisters, Mrs. Mary E. Foresman of Winterset and Mrs. Eva Foster of Great Bend, Kansas, and two brothers, John B. Travis of Peru and Thomas H. Travis of Lincoln township, survive her.
Her bereaved and loving children are Mrs. H. C. Madden of Omaha, Ralph T. Schoenenberger of Marshalltown, Walter J. and J. Guy of Winterset, and Iver E. of Clarinda, besides eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
