Esther L. Branam, Earlham

Esther Louise Branam, 83, of Earlham died of a stroke Dec. 18, 1999 at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 21 at Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with the Revs. Alberta Ervin and Ernest Baiotto officiating. Burial was at Penn Center Cemetery.

Esther Branam was born Jan. 16, 1916, to Albert and Hazel DeVault of Penn Township in Madison County. She attended Penn Township No. 8 Country School for eight years, graduating from Earlham High School in 1934. She married Robert Branam on Dec. 8, 1934.

She taught school for two years and served as librarian in the Earlham Library. She and her husband also owned the Branam Hardware in Earlham. Esther lived in Penn Township for all but eight and one-half years of her life. Those years were spent in California. She was a member of the Earlham United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Judith Moehlis (husband Ronald) of Cedar Falls and Shirley Coyle (husband Allen) of St. Charles; a son, Ron Branam (wife Sandy) of Des Moines; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Esther L. Branam, 83, of Earlham died from complications of a stroke Saturday at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham, with burial at Penn Center Cemetery in rural Earlham.

Mrs. Branam had lived near Earlham most of her life except for a brief period in Whittier, Calif. She retired as co-owner of Branam Hardware in Earlham and was a member of Earlham Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Robert; two daughters, Judy Moehlis of Cedar Falls and Shirley Coyle of St. Charles; a son, Ron of West Des Moines; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.
