Lois Edna Umsted, West Des Moines

Lois Edna Umsted, 93, of West Des Moines, and a former Truro resident, died of a heart ailment July 10, 2001, at Kavanagh House in West Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 13, at Kale Funeral Home in Truro with the Rev. Dennis Shepherd officiating. Burial was at Young Cemetery.

Lois Umsted was born April 23, 1908 to Lewis E. and Edith Margurite (Greene) Orwan of Lorimor. A graduate of Dayton High School, she married Clyde I. Umsted on April 7, 1927, in Fort Dodge. A homemaker Lois had been a member of the Truro United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women's Club, United Methodist Women's Guild, Past Matrons and Model Chapter 174 Order of the Eastern Star in St. Charles. She had moved from Truro to Des Moines in 1994.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, a brother, a sister and a great-great-granddaughter.

She is survived by four daughters, Marilyn Miller (husband Norman) and Alice Meek (husband Jerry), both of West Des Moines; Joan Starr (husband Donald) of Des Moines and Jane McCarty (husband Dennis) of Winter Park, Fla.; two sisters, Catherine Cooper of Winterset and Jean Silverthorn of Earlham; a brother, Frank Orwan of Cherokee Village, Ark.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the United Methodist Church in Truro or Hospice of Central Iowa.

Lois Edna Umsted, 93, of Fountain West Health Care Center in West Des Moines died of a heart ailment Tuesday at Hospice Kavanagh House. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Kale Funeral Home in Truro, with burial at Young Cemetery there.

Mrs. Umsted was born in Lorimor and had lived in Truro all her life before moving to the Des Moines area in 1994. She was a homemaker and a member of the United Methodist Church in Truro, United Methodist Women’s Club and Guild and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter in St. Charles.

She is survived by four daughters, Marilyn Miller and Alice Meek, both of West Des Moines, Joan Starr of Des Moines and Jane McCarty of Winter Park, Fla.; two sisters, Catherine Cooper of Winterset and Jean Silverthorn of Earlham; a brother, Frank Orwan of Cherokee Village, Ark.; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Clyde.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to her church or Hospice of Central Iowa.
