JAMES "DOC' HOLLEN, Winterset

James M. Hollen, 76, of Winterset, died of cancer Sept. 24, 1995 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. Funeral services are today, Wed., Sept. 27, at the First United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. The Rev. Don Frank will officiate the memorial service. Burial of cremains will be at the Winterset Cemetery.

He was born Dec. 17, 1918, on the family farm southwest of Winterset to Ole H. and Mabel (Sawyer) Hollen. He married Lucille Mae Thompson on Oct. 22, 1943 in Waterloo. He attended Harvard country school, junior and senior high at Winterset, graduating in 1936. He had served as president during his junior and senior years. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1942 with a degree in chemical engineering. He had served on the Battle Ship New York off Okinawa during World War II. Following the war, he returned to Iowa State University and graduated with a degree in Veterinary Medicine with honors. He began a solo practice in a small office northwest of the square and later in 1968, he was joined by Dr. Robert Newton to form Hollen & Newton Veterinarians. His son, Dr. Eric Hollen and Dr. Randy Wheeler later joined the practice and in 1979, the practice was moved into the newly built clinic on Highway 92 west of Winterset. He retired from full-time practice in 1984 but remained active in the practice.

He was president of the charter group that created Little League baseball. He also was a member and served as president of Lions Club, Lakeview Country Club, a life member of the Madison County Historical Society. He served on the City Park and Recreation Board, and was a member of the American Legion. Professionally, he was a life member of the Iowa Veterinary Association. He was famed as the only Club Forester of the Lakeview Country Club, rescuing hundreds of roadside trees around Madison County and transplanting them as a proud legacy of his belief in "planting more than you harvest."

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Olga Hollen; and one grandaughter, Kelly Hollen.

Surviving relatives include his wife; two sons, Michael Hollen and wife Joni of Waterloo and Eric Hollen and wife Susan of Winterset; two daughters, Jeanne Rafdal and husband Doug of Des Moines and Maxine Hudson and husband Larry of Winter Park, Fla.; two sisters, Norma Hollen and Evelyn Hollen, both of Winterset; and eight grandchildren.
