VERN SHORT, Died Friday

A farmer, whose residence in Madison County extended through half a century, died Friday, October 31, 1975, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. Vern Short, 81, was born March 24, 1894, in Cresco, Iowa, a community in Howard County.

Mr. Short was the son of James Mudica and Emma Mudica. After the death of his father and ill health of his mother, he was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Short of Sully, Iowa. At the age of ten, Mr. Short was placed in a foster home with Mr. and Mrs. Ahart Simmerman of Clarke County, Iowa, after the death of his adopted mother.

The marriage of Mr. Short to Susie Kirk took place February 18, 1914 in Des Moines. Mr. Short was a charter member of the Madison County Chapel Church of Christ and served as a leader of the Barney Christian Church until he moved to Winterset in 1970.

A member of the First Christian Church of Winterset, Mr. Short was active in both civic and church acivities. He is survived by his wife, Susie Short, a daughter, Christine Farlow and a son, Willard Short, both of Winterset, and by five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Mr. Short was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.

Funeral services for Vern Short were conducted Monday, November 3, 1975 at 2 p.m. from the First Christian Church, the Rev. Eldon E. Jandebeur presiding. Burial was at the Winterset Cemetery.
