Clella Jordan Coffman

Clella, youngest daughter of John R. and Sarah H. Jordan, was born in Madison county, October 20, 1892, and departed this life January 27, 1929, at the Des Moines General hospital. Death came Sunday at 11:10 a.m., at the age of 36 years, 3 months and 7 days, as a result of burns received from a gasoline explosion while cleaning floors in her home at 3106 W. 47th street, Des Moines.

She grew to womanhood in Madison county, where she resided with her parents until her marriage to B. H. Coffman, in 1911. To this union was born one daughter, Clella Fern. For the last 12 years she has resided in Des Moines, where she had gained a large acquaintance and made a host of friends.

She united with the Mondaman Avenue Christian church, nine years ago, where she held her membership at the time of her death. Her influence will be greatly missed, as she was always active in the social welfare of her community with the young people.

Besides her husband and daughter she leaves to mourn her departure, her mother, Mrs. S. H. Jordan of Winterset; three brothers, Talley of Des Moines, and Norris and Forest of Winterset; four sisters, Mrs. H. P. Proctor of Greenfield; Mrs. Bessie Willoughby of Rockford, Illinois; Miss Zetta Jordan of El Monte, California, and Mrs. H. R. Pope of Barney, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted January 30th, at Dunn's funeral home in Des Moines, at 10 a.m., and at the Church of Christ in Winterset at 1 o'clock, by Rev. Rash of the Beaverdale Federated church of Des Moines.

Interment was made in the Winterset cemetery.

She was seriously burned Saturday afternoon when gasoline she was using ignited. She was rubbing a small rug with the fluid, when the flames spread and enveloped her clothing. Her 16 year old daughter, Fern, attempted to aid her mother, and called neighbors for help. She was severely burned about the legs, arms, chest and head.

She is survived by her husband, her mother, Mrs. S. H. Jordan; three brothers, Talley of Des Moines; Norris and Forrest of Winterset, and four sisters, Mrs. H. P. Proctor of Greenfield, Mrs. F. W. Willoughby of Rockford, Illinois; Mrs. H. R. Pope of Lorimor and Miss Zetta Jordan of El Monte, California.

The deceased was 36 years of age and was born on a farm west of Winterset. She attended school here and later taught in the county.
