Claude D. Grout, Winterset

Claude Dwight Grout, 76, of Winterset died of a respiratory ailment Aug. 18, 1999, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 21, at the First Baptist Church in Winterset with Pastor John Shaull officiation. Burial was at Clark Cemetery in Monroe Township, Madison County, with graveside military services performed by American Legion Post 184 and VFW Post 8142 of Winterset.

Claude Grout was born Aug. 25, 1922, in Madison County to Charles Henry and Mary (Seller) Grout. He was a 1940 graduate of Winterset High School and a Navy veteran of World War II. He married Eleanor Sauer on June 3, 1947, at Ellis, Kan. A lifetime resident of Madison County, Claude was a retired farmer. He also worked for Penn-Dixie Quarry and MidWest Concrete Industries in West Des Moines. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Winterset.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Claudia Royal (husband Dennis) of Sioux Falls, S. D., and Bonnie Caldwell (husband Gordon) Richmond, Va.; one brother, Loren Grout (wife Lois) of Winterset; three sisters, Doris Schirm (husband Dale) of Salt Lake City, Utah, Ruby Estell (husband Floyd) of Denver, Colo., and Marjorie Mount (husband Robert) of Ottumwa; two grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the First Baptist Church in Winterset.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
