Martha Hughes was born March 27, 1826 in Washington county, Pennsylvania. Died Oct 7, 1908, aged 82 years, 7 months and 10 days.
She was married to David Egy, Dec. 7, 1847, in Pennsylvania. In 1855 they moved to Madison county, Iowa, and settled on the farm on which she died. To this union were born five children, four boys and one girl. Jonathan W., of Stetler, Canada, James S. of Winterset, Iowa. George M. of Langdon, Kansas. Sarah E. who died in 1874 and David P. with whom she lived at the time of her death.
David Egy, her husband, died in 1869, leaving her to fight life's battles alone with her children. She was once a Baptist, but so far as is known became a member of the Church of Christ in Winterset at the time of its organization about 1855.

Mrs. Martha Egy, aged 82 years, died at the home of her son, Dave Egy, of Lincoln township, Oct. 7th. The funeral was held from the home Saturday, conducted by Rev. House, of the Church of Christ of this city. Interment took place in the Gordon cemetery.
