KATHRYN KALE Died Monday

Mrs. Kathryn Kale of Winterset, a most distinguished citizen of this community over a long period of years, died Monday, Dec. 8 (1969), at Madison Manor. She was 89 years of age.

Mrs. Kale was a life-time resident of this community. She was born in Union township July 15, 1880, a daughter of E. R. and Hattie Cox Zeller. In 1893, the family moved into Winterset, and here she graduated from Winterset High Schol with the class of 1897.

After graduation from high school, Mrs. Kale started a distinguished career in education that covered a period of 56 years. She taught rural school in Jefferson township, then enrolled at Simpson college in Indianola, where she graduated in 1903. For two years she taught in the Indianola High school, then in the Winterset high school until 1907.

She was married to Lester Kale of Winterset in 1907, and they moved to a farm east of town. From 1918 to 1923 she served as a supply teacher in the Winterset schools.

Mrs. Kale was elected Madison county superintendent of schools in 1924, holding that office until 1936. She returned to Winterset High school as a teacher in 1937, continuing there until her resignation in 1953.

Mrs. Kale was an active member of the Methodist church throughout her life-time. She joined the church when she was 11 years of age, and remained a member until her death. She taught Sunday school classes in Indianola and Winterset for 55 years, and for 15 years taught the Bible course at Winterset High school.

Mrs. Kale's husband died in 1955. Their daughter, Deloris, had died in 1929, and a baby son in infancy. She is survived by a son, Eugene Z. Kale of Rio Vista, Calif.; a foster daughter, Thelma Dieter of Cincinnati, O., and a brother, Joseph Zeller of Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held this Thursday at 2 p.m. from the First United Methodist church of Winterset, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Everett K. Burham. Burial will be made in the Winterset Cemetery.
