John Victor Benz, son of Christoph Benz and Margretha, nee Scar, was born in Penn Township, Madison, County, Iowa, on September 28, 1878. He was a member of Zion Lutheran church in Dexter since his baptism on January 7, 1879. He received his education in Madison County. He was confrimed (confirmed) on March 18, 1894. On July 9, 1907 he was married to Effie Sellers at Vivian, South Dakota. They were parents to one son by adoption. His wife preceded him in death on January 8, 1953.
Mr. Benz was engaged in farming northwest of Dexter for many years. He spent his last years as a resident of the Garwood Rest Home in Dexter. After a brief illness he passed away at the Dexter hospital on Friday, December 4, at the age of 86 years, 2 months and 6 days. He is survived by his son Harold of Dallas Center, one grandson, and one great grandson, and one brother Walter of Dexter, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services under the direction of the Evans Funeral Home were conducted on December 7 at Zion Lutheran church, Dexter, with the Rev. Norman M. Luecht officiating. Interment was in the Dexter cemetery. Casket bearers were Herman Roberts, Richard Clausen, Walter Schafer, Pete Schafer, Alex Hanner, Ray Cave.
