NORMAN E. HOLLEN, Died Saturday

Winterset Madisonian
March 25, 1959

Norman E. Hollen, a prominent Winterset citizen for half a century, died Saturday, March 21, at a Des Moines hospital. He was 73 years of age.

Mr. Hollen had been a Winterset banker for almost 50 years, before retiring last April. For 26 years he had served as secretary of the Winterset school board, and for about 30 years as treasurer of the Winterset Methodist church. He was a trustee of the church for many years, was treasurer of the Winterset Cemetery association and the Madison county Salvation Army orginization, and secretary of the Winterset Masonic Lodge. He envisioned and helped establish the Abner Black Memorial Trust fund for handicapped children.

Mr. Hollen was born March 14, 1886, in Adair county, a son of John and Kristine Hollen. He graduated from the Winterset high school with the class of 1908 and took a business course in Des Moines.

He accepted a position as a bookkeeper at the old Madison county bank in 1909, and continued there until his retirement in April 1958 as assistant cashier at the Union State Bank.

He was married Aug. 19, 1914 to Laura Travis. They were parents of four children. He is survived by his wife; the four children, Dr. Robert Hollen of Creston, William Hollen of Oregon, Mrs. Marjorie Streyffeler (Streffler) of Winterset and Mrs. Margaret Stark of California; eight grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Irma Underwood of Ithaca, N.Y.

Funeral services were held this Tuesday from the First Methodist church of Winterset, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. John C. Porath. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery with Masonic ritual.
