Mrs. Malissa Ann Pierce

Malissa Ann Pierce, daughter of Wm. and Athelia Calfee, was born in Kentucky on February 7, 1840. When a child of two or three years old she moved with her parents to Putnum county, Missouri, where she resided until the time of her marriage in 1862, to Rev. Jesse C. Pierce.

She endured the hardships of a pioneer preacher's wife.

When a young woman she united with the Christian Union church in Wayne county, Iowa. Her husband preceded her in death about thirteen years. After the death of her husband she lived with her sister, Mrs. Sarah Harbart, for about five years, near Powersville, Missouri. In December, 1920, she came to Madison county, Iowa, to the home of her nephew, J. H. Rogers.

In February, 1927, she fell, breaking her hip, confining her to her bed until her death. On June 29, 1927, she was removed to the county home where she received the best of care from Mr. and Mrs. Gilleland.

Aunt Ann, as she was lovingly called, died at the ripe old age of 88 years, 5 months and 21 days, of cancer and complications caused by her fall. She was a patient sufferer and in the last month of her life she greatly enjoyed a visit from her nephews, J. W. Rogers, from Harrisonville, Missouri; J. F. Calfee of Kansas City, Missouri; J. A. Rogers of Salida, Colorado and J. H. Rogers of Lorimor. She leaves to mourn her loss a large number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. F. Clare McCallon of the Church of Christ at two o'clock Monday, July 30. Burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
