James Thompson was born near Buckna in county Antrim, Ireland, Nov. 17, 1836 and died at his home in Lincoln township Jan. 7, 1916, aged 79 years and two months.

He was one of a family of ten children, four sons and six daughters. He came to this country at the age of twenty-one and staid for a few years in New York state before coming to Shelby county, Iowa, where he remained for four years. He settled in Winterset forty years ago and has made his home here ever since.

He was united in marriage with Miss Flora Elizabeth Gooden Dec. 2, 1884, who died Nov. 22, 1911. To this union were born three children, two sons and one daughter, who survive him. Of his father's family one sister remains, Mrs. Ellen McCullum, of Winterset.

Mr. Thompson was of sturdy Scotch Irish Presbyterian stock. He was brought up in the church and when he came to Winterset he united with the Presbyterian church at this place. He was unable to attend the servies in recent years on account of declining health. He was an affectionate husband and father, a good friend and neighbor. Rev. Corkey conducted the funeral service at the house Monday morning.
