Dr. Edward “Doc” L. Miles, 84, passed away while surrounded by family, on Jan. 16, 2018, from congestive heart failure.
Ed was born on Aug. 12, 1933, in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born to Milton Miles, and Lillian (Goldenson) Miles. He shared his vibrant and dynamic life with his love, his wife, Linda. He built his home and his life in St. Charles, Iowa.
Ed was educated at the University of Iowa, Drake University, and COMS-College of Osteopathic Medicine, graduating in 1962 as a D.O.
Doc then moved to St. Charles and started his own medical practice out of a little brick bank. He had a long and satisfying career as the owner and operator of St. Charles Clinic where he enjoyed practicing medicine for 32 years.
Ed shined as a patriot and loved being part of the military family. He first served in the Medical Service Division of the U.S. Army right out of high school. He then served in the Iowa National Guard as Army Surgeon. Followed by the Iowa Air National Guard as State Flight Surgeon. Upon retiring from his career in the services, his rank became Brigadier General.
Ed was admired and respected by his professional peers, local patients, beloved friends, and his extended family. Doc had an adoration for the outdoors, including pheasant hunting, morel mushrooms, target shooting with the kids, and was always a great shot. He loved adventures with his best friends, flying his Piper Comanche airplane, Halloween parties, and his cabin in the woods.
As a snowbird in Arizona, you could find him walking his beloved and loyal dog, Solo, near Superstition Mountain, at the local flea market, or in front of his chiminea – a cigar in one hand, a crossword in the other. If he wasn’t collecting Aladdin lamps, it was vintage watches or heirloom firearms. He was quick with a joke, or a light of your smoke.
Ed had an insatiable desire to live life to the fullest, to not sweat the small stuff, and to ride like the wind. With his leather vest, Levis and red Converse tennies ... Ride like the wind, Doc!
Ed is survived by his wife, Linda; and two daughters, Teri Miles; and Robyn (Scott) Cooper; Kyla (Bret) Cox; John (Marina) Findley; and Charlotte Findley. Ed enjoyed and adored his grandchildren, Davis Cooper and Devin Cooper; Amanda Barach and her three children, Makayla, Elijah, and Maya; Nathan (Krista) Cox; Cazsh Poush; Kaitlin Findley; Salvador Findley; Maxine Findley; Steve Vasquez; Nicholas Findley.
Ed was preceded in death by his father, Milton; mother, Lillian; and brother, Morton Miles.
Ed’s family will have a Celebration of Life to honor him in the near future. Call Merle Hay Funeral Home (515) 278-4633. A notification will be posted with details. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Mercy Hospice-Johnston (5820 Winwood Dr., Johnston IA 50131).
