Services for Pioneer Woman at Chadron

Mrs. E. Keeney's Mother Buried Last Wednesday Afternoon

Malissa M. Shearer was born at Terre Haute, Indiana, August 20, 1850, and departed from this world, after a short illness at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ernest Keeney of Rushville, Monday morning, February 17, at the age of 85 years, 5 months, and 23 days.

She was united in marriage with John A. Macumber of Madison Co. Iowa, April 20, 1873. To this union five children were born, all of whom are still living.

The family resided in Iowa until 1886 when they moved to Chadron, Nebraska, to establish a home under pioneer conditions on a farm north of Chadron. Mr. and Mrs. Macumber associated themselves with the development of a pioneer community and spent the greater part of their lives on the original home.

Mrs. Macumber will be well remembered by the pioneer residents as a staunch and kindly neighbor whose activities were divided between service to her community and the establishment of a home for her family.

Her passing marks the close of a long and eventful life colored with the hardships and satisfactions of the pioneering spirit.

Besides her many friends, she leaves to mourn her passing, a devoted husband, John A. Macumber,; five children: William, Edward and James of Chadron, John Jr. of Gordon and Mrs. Ernest Keeney of Rushville, Nebraska, together with fifteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Her death is the first broken link in the chain of this family yie of almost 63 years.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Ellewine Funeral Home with Reverend Newland officiating. Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery.
