February, 1999DEXTER - Willard Harold Murphy, 85, of Dexter died of a heart ailment Saturday Feb. 6, 1999, at his home. Services were held Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Calvary Assembly of God in Dexter, with burial at Dexter Cemetery.
Mr. Murphy was born to John and Eva (Leeper) Murphy Feb. 5, 1924, in Adel. He served in the Navy from 1942 until 1946, and married Marjorie Clark in 1945. He was a member of the American Legion Post #419 and Calvary Assembly of God in Dexter. He worked as a farmer, at the Standard station, for Parker Brothers in Des Moines, and for General Mills in Cedar Rapids until his retirement in 1989, when he moved back to Dexter.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Harold "Butch" of State Center and Russell "Murph" of Earlham; three daughters, Gloria Fredericksen of Dexter, Mary Jo Saffeels of Underwood and Diane Montanye of Dexter; one step-sister, Maxine Hadley of Dexter; 27 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Lois Waddell, Leona and Luella Murphy; two brothers, Donald and Millard; one half-brother, George Leeper; one step-sister, Kathleen Love and one step-brother, Leland "Buck" Schell.
Transcriber’s note: Willard and Marjorie lived in the Penn Center neighborhood for years and the kids attended Earlham Schools.
