Linda Hupton, 78, of Winterset, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at Azria Health Winterset.
Linda Jean Bass was born in Winterset, Iowa on April 5, 1945, the daughter of Walter and Velma (Fleming) Bass. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1963 and attended college at Drake and Mary Crest College, receiving her Bachelor's degree in Music.
Linda always had a deep love and talent for music. Playing clarinet in the Winterset HS band, ignited a joy, discipline and esprit de corps that she tried to foster for others as a music educator throughout her adult life. She shared her passion and advocated for music education as an elementary teacher in the public schools for over 30 years and also guided countless students as a private piano teacher in her home. Guiding neighborhood children and her own family members in their piano training brought her great personal and professional satisfaction during her retirement.
Beyond her musical talents, Linda found joy in sewing, painting, cooking, and gardening throughout her life. Her scrapbooks are a testament to the memories she cherished and the beauty she saw in the world. Traveling was another of Linda's great joys. From Costa Rica to Alaska and Europe, Linda yearned to discover new places, people and cultures. Linda enjoyed going to the theater on occasion and even grew up playing many characters on stage in her younger years.
Linda's commitment to her faith and her community was evident in her involvement with St. Catherine's Church in Des Moines and her dedication to Central American charity projects. She believed in using her talents to make the world a better place and touched countless lives through her generosity and compassion.
Above all else, Linda thrived on her family. Whether in Iowa, Arizona, or Minnesota, she enjoyed participating in her children’s and grandchildren’s activities. From attending concerts and sports, to sharing her love of music through piano lessons, Linda supported those she loved and passed on her talents, interests and values.
Linda is survived by her children, Gina Hupton (Chad Johnson), Matthew (Naomi) Hupton and Nicholas (Tara) Hupton; sister, Mary Jo (George) Baitinger; and grandchildren, Abbey Fox-Hupton, Neville Hupton, Veda Hupton, Tyler Hupton, Siena Hupton, Sylvia Johnson, and Lilian Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Velma (Fleming) Bass; and her ex-husband, C. Edward Hupton.
