Harley Fay Reed, son of Fred and Clara Smith Reed, was born in Clarke County near Osceola, Ia. on Nov. 11, 1890 and died at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Des Moines, Ia. on Oct. 12, 1970 after a long illness.

He attended school in Osceola and graduated from high school there. He worked as a barber for several years, then attended the Hohenachue-Carpenter College of Embalming in Des Moines, graduating in 1916.

He was united in marriage to Jessie Ream June 4, 1910 at Osceola. To this union five children were born: Wallace, Ivan, Marie, Jack and Theresa. The family moved to St. Charles in 1918, and he operated the Reed Funeral Home in St. Charles for 49 years, retiring six years ago when they moved to Des Moines.

He is survived by his wife Jessie; two daughters, Mrs. Marie Fuggiti of Chicago, and Mrs. Theresa Shirley of Chillicothe, Illinois; three sons, Wallace and Jack of Tampa, Fla., and Ivan of Des Moines, besides many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Oct. 15, 1970 at the Christian Church in St. Charles with the Rev. Cecil Murrow officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery at Osceola.

Coordinator note: Many Madison County people had their final arrangements made out of the Reed Funeral home.
