Died, at her residence, near St. Charles, Madison County, Iowa, on Wednesday evening, August 10, 1881, Mrs. Mary Brown, wife of Capt. J.M. Brown, aged 48 years. Mrs. Brown's last illness was of short duration, although she had not been well for a few days previous. On attempting to arouse her on Tuesday morning, she was found to be unconscious, and remained in that condition except for a few moment, until her death on Wednesday evening.

Mrs. Brown was a native of Ohio and was married to J.M. Brown of Union county, in that State in 1852. A few years afterward they removed to St. Charles, in this State, where they remained until the time of her death.

Mrs. Brown was an active woman in all departments of life. What she did, she did with all her might. Indeed, her energy and activity was beyond the degree of strength she possessed. She was devoted to her friends and family - a loving companion and kind mother.

She was active in relation to the church of which she was a member an especially was she a worker in the great cause of temperance, being a member of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. Her last visit to Winterset on the Saturday previous to her death was to attend a meeting of that organization.

She was buried Friday evening in the lonely churchyard west of town, beside a loved son and daughter. The funeral services were held at her late residence and was conducted by Rev. Raitt assisted by Rev. Wallace, of Winterset, and Steward of St. Charles.

She was a resident of that community for about twenty-five years. She will be much missed, especially by a bereaved husband and only son and adopted daughter. Her place in church and Sabbath school was seldom if ever vacant when health permitted, and there she will be especially missed.
