Ethel McVay, 85, of Winterset, died Friday, November 24, 2023, at Azria Health in Winterset. Celebration of Life Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday November 29, 2023, at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Pam Kerr will officiate. Burial will be at Moon Cemetery in Macksburg. Open visitation will be 2-7 p.m. Tuesday November 28, 2023, at Powers Funeral Home in Creston, with family receiving friends 5-7 p.m. Tuesday November 28, 2023. Memorials may be made to the family. Services are pending at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Online condolences may be given at powersfh.com.

Ethel Irene McVay, daughter of Ray Elmer and Loah Lucille (Hamilton) Fisher was born November 3, 1938, in Centerville, IA. Ethel was educated in Mystic, Afton and Thayer. On March 15, 1956, she was united in marriage to Calvin Rex McVay in Afton, IA. They settled in Afton, IA., later moving to Thayer and Lorimor where they lived for 35 years. Ethel was an active homemaker and mother. They later moved to Winterset and she began working as a clerical technician at Principal Financial Insurance Company in Des Moines until retiring in December of 2002.

Ethel is survived by her children, Donald (Carolyn) McVay of Winterset, Diana (Jim) Boyd, of Columbia, KY. and David McVay of Columbia, KY., her sister Sally Nichols, of Bondurant, IA., one brother, John (Linda) Hewitt, of Afton; eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Calvin in 2005; her daughter Christina Scott in 2013 and a brother-in-law, Evan Nichols.

Transcriber’s note: Ethel and her husband Calvin were instrumental in getting several Madison County cemeteries cleared of timber and brush so they could be maintained by the township trustees. They were also very active members of the Madison County Genealogy Society.
