Leland M. Couch – Urbandale

Leland Merrill Couch, 91, of Urbandale passed from this life to life eternal on July 6, 2015 after a struggle against Alzheimer’s disease. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14 at Urbandale United Church of Christ.

Lee was born September 19, 1923 near Dexter. He graduated from Valley High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After the war he attended Drake University where he met the love of his life, Margaret Jane (Mickey) Sutherland. They married June 18, 1949 and built the Couch home in Urbandale where he reside for 60 years. Lee was employed at the Bankers Life Company for 38 years.

Lee was an active member of the Urbandale United Church of Christ and the Urbandale Lions Club. His favorite hobby was volunteerism. He shared his talents with Hunger Hike, Food Pantry, DUNA, Amanda the Panda, and Urbandale Cub Scouts. In 1999 he and Mickey were named Urbandale Citizens of the Year. He and Mickey also enjoyed traveling with the Friendship Force and on many cruises.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mickey, son James Kevin Couch, Mother Caroline “Calla” Couch, father Percy “Jack” Couch, step-mother Ruth and step-sister Phyllis Collins.

Surviving him are children Jeff Couch, Kristi (Bernie) Evans, Rhonda Soleem Couch, Kathy Marean (Sandy Gahn); grandchildren Rob (Becca) Evans, Joe Evans, Ryan Evans, Alex Marean; and Matt Couch (Julie Dona), and their mother Amy Christensen (Ron Lindhart); six great-grandchildren; uncle Kenneth Brinton, sister-in-law Shirley Sutherland , and many other family and friends.

Lee’s family is especially grateful to the loving care-givers at Glen Oaks, Trinity Center at Luther Park, the Unity Point Hospice system, and Mercy Hospice-Johnston.

In a final act of service, Lee has shared his earthly remains with the Des Moines University body donor program.
