Page 13Mary J. Stanley was born in Guilford County, North Carolina, Aug. 1, 1828; died in Bancroft, Kansas, Feb. 22, 1911. Her family moved to Indiana in 1830. She married Joshua Stanley in Greenborough, Henry County, Indiana July 11, 1848. They moved to Jasper County, Iowa in 1863 where they resided several years, then to Earlham, Iowa in 1874, from which place they moved to Kansas in 1879 where they resided until her death, with the exception of a brief stay in Missouri and Oregon.
Nine children, five girls and four boys were born to this union. Six of these survive to mourn the loss of their mother, one daughter dying in infancy, Jesse C. Stanley, deceased; Mrs. Isaiah Williams, deceased; Mrs. T.E. Downing, Oregon; Mrs. Nelson Eastman, Oregon; Mrs. S.D. Hockett, Earlham, Ia; Rev. J.A. Stanley, Oregon; Charles Stanley, Kansas.
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley were born in the Quaker faith (Mrs.Stanley having been a minister in that church for a number of years) and remained true to the tenets of that denomination, but since coming to a community where no organization of Quakers was accessible, they have affiliated with other churches.
Grandma Stanley was a rare Christian character. She was beloved by a large circle of friends who sympathize deeply with the family in their loss. The funeral was held in the Union church at Bancroft Friday Feb. 24th and was largely attended. Services were led by Rev. A.L. Wood, pastor of the Goff M.E. church. Interment was made in Ontario Cemetery.
