County Briefs – Macksburg

Mrs. F. A. Bonham and Vernie Busch received word Wednesday of the death of their cousin, James Myers of Escondido, California. Mr. Myers was very well known here as he lived in this vicinity for many years prior to moving to California.

James M. Myers Passes Away; Services Friday

James M. Myers, who passed away Tuesday, February 8, was one of the 11 children of the Rev. Michael Myers and Nancy Jane Goar Myers, early settlers of Grandriver township, Madison county, Iowa.

His father was a native of Rockingham county, Virginia, in the Shenandoah valley, a noted passageway for both Union and Confederate troops during the War Between the States. It Is the garden spot of the world, as named by the Pennsylvania Dutch who were the early settlers of the fertile valley.

The Myers branch of that sturdy folk who emigrated to York county, Pennsylvania, before the colonies had fought their way through to become a free and united people, branched out in all directions and hundreds of them have never seen the ancestral home. Nancy Jane Goar was born in the state of Indiana, of east Virginia stock, and in girlhood came to Iowa with her parents who settled near Winterset, the county seat of Madison county. She was married to Michael Myers in the middle fifties and bore him four daughters and seven sons.

One sister and four brothers are still living. The sister, Mrs. Sarah Jane Blair, lives in Grinnell, la. Isaac H. Myers resides in Lemar, the Rev. B. F. Myers, Pomona, David William Myers in Long Beach, and Jiles Myers, Newport, Wn. Jim is the first of his family to depart this life and there remains his faithful wife of 53 years, his daughter, Della Myers Foy, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. One grandson, Edwin is in training camp at Everett, and Ellwood is at Bilings, Mt. Mrs. Edna Orantas the older granddaughter lives in Escondido and the younger, Evelyn, is attending school here.

The late Mr. Myers died suddenly while en route to meet his brother, B. W., and wife at the stage office. They had planned a few days visit.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Alhiser Mortuary chapel Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock with the Rev. Ernest Nichols officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Memorial park.
