Saturday, July 15, 2023Norman Dean Townsend of Clive, Iowa (formerly of St. Charles, Iowa) passed away on July 6, 2023, at the Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Just saying “farewell to all my family and friends”. I never had any initials after my name. No great deeds or accomplishments.My special love to my wife, Jan, of 62 years, a son and 3 daughters, all of my grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I was just a son, a US Army Veteran, a father, a grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
No tears but rather a smile on your face until we meet again.
Norman was born March 5, 1935, the fourth out of five children of Arthur and Stella (Pearson) Townsend in Marion County, Iowa on his grandfather’s farm. He passed away in Des Moines, Iowa on July 6, 2023.
He graduated from Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa.
He leaves behind his son, Norman A. (Susan) Townsend of Waco, TX, his daughters, Becky (Britt) Davis of Kansas City, KS., Amy (Brian) Pickering of Ankeny, IA, Chris (Steve) Karpowich of Lenexa, KS. Half-sister, Kay (Pete) Ontiveros of Bellevue, NE. Grandchildren: Travis (Michelle) Townsend of Angleton, TX, Tiffany (Allen) Barham of Fort Worth, TX, Ryan (Janna) Ruggles of Cedarburg, WI, Jamie (Ashley Stanley) Ruggles of Belton, MO, Joey and Jared Davis of Kansas City, KS, Clay and Emma Karpowich of Lenexa, KS. He also has nine great-grandchildren: Catherine, Margaret, John Austin and Penelope Townsend, Annie, Ben and Allie Barham, Jaryn and Raya Ruggles. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Kay Fisher, sister-in-law Mae Prindle and brother-in-law Bud Pameticky.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Jan, sisters: Opal (Bob) Starbeck, Beatrice (Mick) Starbeck, brothers: John D. Townsend, Robert G. Townsend, step-sister Johnene Pameticky, half-sister Jean (Paul) Novak and sister-in-law Mary Jean Harmon.
Services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, August 12th at West Des Moines Christian Church, 4501 Mills Civic Pkwy, West Des Moines, IA. Burial of Norman and Jan will follow at approx. 11:30 at the St. Charles Cemetery, 2559 Windwood Ave., St. Charles, IA with full military honors. Visitation and lunch will be held at Talk Shop Lounge, 3357 St. Charles Rd., St. Charles, after the burial (approx. noon). Please join us for one or all.
