Born Darlene Joyce Gray on June 30, 1933 in Winterset, Iowa, she was the daughter of Elbert and Ruby (Algoe) Gray. She grew up in Winterset and graduated from DeSoto High School in 1952. In her younger years, she participated in 4H and enjoyed square dancing with Rural Youth. It was at one of these dances where she met the love of her life, Dale Hamilton. They were united in marriage on April 4, 1954 in Winterset. A loving and dedicated wife and mother, Darlene worked hard taking care of her family and their home. She was a faithful member of Ferguson Bible Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher, a Deaconess and a member of the Ladies Aid. Darlene was also active for several years with the Christian Women’s Club.

In her free time, she enjoyed tending to her flower beds and staying active through water aerobics at the YMCA. She was an excellent cook, providing many meals for numerous hired hands over the years and always made sure to have fresh-baked cookies. More than anything else, Darlene enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her “Wednesday dates” with her friends.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Steven (Debbie) Hamilton of West Jefferson, OH and Michelle (Trent) Upah of Ferguson, IA; her grandchildren: Francesca (J.P.) Mosley, Stefanie (Jimmy) Hall, Giovanna (Dan) Brooks, Hillary (Joseph) Yutzy, Alex (Tami) Hamilton, Olivia (Brad) Lorenz, Sam (Haley) Upah, Emilee (Jordan) Smith and Max (Amy) Upah; 23 great-grandchildren; her sister, Donna Carr of Phoenix, AZ; numerous nieces and nephews and several good friends.

In eternal life, Darlene is reunited with her beloved husband Dale, her son Douglas Hamilton and her siblings: Lavon Gray and Robert Gray.
