Helen Walker-Laverrenz, 71, of Winterset, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, in Winterset, Iowa.

She was born on February 13, 1951, in Muscatine, Iowa to Absalom Jacob and Datie Annebell (Mickey) Walker. They moved to Mt. Pleasant, IA this is where Helen grew up and graduated high school in 1969.

She moved to Des Moines in the late 70’s, she got a job working for First Realty until it was bought by Alliance Realty, staying in property management until 2008 when her health forced her to retire.

In 1980 she married Donald Rex Young of Des Moines, IA. To this union they had a daughter Elisha. In 1987 they divorced. In 2007 Helen married Gary Laverrenz of Urbandale.

Helen enjoyed music, (especially George Strait) dancing, playing cards just having a good time with her family and friends. She could light up any room she walked into. She had a love of cars and trucks; she owned many that would make any car collector envious. She also took up candle making as a hobby with her best friend Leigh.

After complications of a surgery, she had in 2006 Helen was diagnosed with early onset of Alzheimer’s. This as we all know is a very debilitating disease that robbed her of many years with her family.

Left to cherish her memory include brother Ted Ogier of Mt. Pleasant, IA; daughters, Elisha Vickroy (Travis) of Lucas, Iowa, Shelly (Todd) Weller of Urbandale, Iowa, Kayce Wheeler (Scott) of Urbandale; Grandchildren Cody Hammond, Gabe Hammond, Ian Hammond Walker Vickroy, Jessica Weller, Katie Weller, Raelynn Wheeler, Taylor Wheeler and Christopher Wheeler. Great Grandchildren Cash, Cameron, Lilly, Charlea, Maven, Kenna, Cecelia, Archer and Natalie.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister-in-law Yovonne Ogier, beloved husband, Gary Laverrenz.

Helen did not wish to have a traditional funeral and chose to be cremated. Her family will host a celebration of life this spring/summer. This is one of her favorite times of the year to be outside getting her hands dirty.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
