Richard Ray Tyer, 81, of Winterset, IA, passed away peacefully at home on December 5, 2022.

He was born January 27, 1941, in Winterset, Iowa, the son of Roscoe and Mary (Hendricks) Tyer. He graduated from Winterset High School in 1959. He served in the Navy from 1961 to 1965, stationed aboard the USS Han¬cock. After discharge, Richard went to work with Tyer Brothers, a longstanding Winterset construction business. He took over the business from his father in 1978, continuing to build many of the homes and businesses found in Winterset and central Iowa. Never one to sit around and do nothing, he also was a member of the Winterset Fire Department for 17 years, and a high school football referee for 18 years. After a long career in construction, Richard worked for Lakeview Country Club for 15 years.

Richard enjoyed getting out and about - even in his final weeks you would often find him on his scooter, going to coffee at Montross or to church group at Winterset Community Church. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed driving to destinations as far as Alaska. Richard was a big fan of local sports and loved cheering for his Winterset Huskies. He had a playful spirit and will always be remembered for that ornery twinkle in his eyes.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Gary Tyer and infant sister Peggy, and brother-in-law Edgar Coffman. He is survived by his wife Karen (Alles) Tyer, and children Brad Tyer and wife Chandra, Karna Jakobs and fiancé Jacob Meggison, Melissa Shahan and husband Greg, and Dan Wildin and significant other Misty Phillips; grandchildren Mason Tyer, Blake Tyer, Toby Givens, Taylor Lincoln, Cadence Lincoln, Chelsea Simmons, Brenden Tyer, Alex Guion, Taylor Miller and husband Caleb, and Molly Shahan; sister Gayla (Tyer) Coffman, and brother Tom Tyer and wife Ruth.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Winterset Community Church on Wednesday, December 14th at 11am. In honor of Richard’s love of the Huskies, the family would love to see you wearing your Husky attire.
