Wednesday, August 31, 2022Raymond Earl Bennett was born on Nov. 25, 1949, in Winterset, Iowa, to Harry “Ward” and Helen (Kaufmann) Bennett. He was one of thirteen children. He attended East High School in Des Moines, Iowa, and then entered the United States Army in the 101st Airborne Division, the “Screaming Eagles.”
Ray married Deborah (Baughman) Carter in 1970 and they later divorced. To this union three children were born—Wendy (Bowman), Anthony “Tony” Bennett, and Todd Bennett.
Ray loved baseball, racing, and taking road trips with his family. He didn’t know a stranger and he could strike up a conversation with anyone. Ray will be remembered for his pranks, jokes, and storytelling.
He is survived by his life-long dear friend, Roberta Ficek of Des Moines; children, Wendy (Lonnie) Bowman and Todd Bennett of Winterset; and grandchildren, Tony Bennett of Des Moines, and Logan and Brooklyn Bowman of Winterset. Also left to cherish his memory are his siblings: Dale of Arizona, Leona Henry of Des Moines, and Beverly Barry of Urbandale; many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins; his bonus kids: Angela (John) Anderson, Rodney and Chrissy Lampman, Robert and Brooke Lampman, Stacy and Joe Young all of Des Moines; his bonus grandkids and great-grandkids: Trevor and Hannah Pinegar, Chelzie and Steven DeGoey, Kyla Marie, Kinsley and Alaina, Zeke and Zephyr, Alaiyah, Juliette and Lyncoln, Mathew and Tawnie.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Anthony “Tony” Ray Bennett; siblings: Joy, Connie, George, Max, Vernon, Richard, Virginia Jo, Phyllis, and Kenny; his niece, Candace Bennett; and his nephew, Rodney Bennett.
Ray passed away on July 30, 2022. A Celebration of Life was held on Saturday, Aug. 27, with military rites at Fairview Cemetery, Madison County, Iowa. Ray was laid to rest beside his son, Tony. A luncheon was hosted by the VFW Auxiliary at the VFW Hall afterwards.
