Sarah Rice Montgomery was born in Clarksonville, Pennsylvania, October 27, 1823, and died at her home in De Soto, Iowa, February 2nd, 1912, aged 88 years, 3 months and 6 days.

In her ninth year she united with the Presbyterian church to which her parents and family belonged and lived worthily in that communion until after marriage, when she united with the Methodist Episcopal church.

She was married to Rev. John Montgomery, November 27, 1850, and joyfully cast in her lot with him to endure the hardships, trials and privations of the life of the itinerant ministry. Shortly after his marriage they came to Iowa, where Brother Montgomery joined the Iowa Conference on trial and in 1856 by division of territory became a member of the upper Iowa conference of which today he is the only surviving charter member. For 35 years they labored together. The country was new, society was in a formative condition and population very scattering. The charges often covering an entire county. The salaries paid were very scanty and the exposure of health and life almost constant. In all these scenes of trial sister Montgomery was a support to her husband and constantly shared his journeys and labors, gladly going where they were needed most.

On one occasion during the Civil war when Brother Montgomery’s life was threatened in a disloyal community this good woman accompanied him to his preaching appointment in defiance of the threats of the ungodly. After Brother Montgomery superannuated they resided for several years at Albion, Iowa, one of their best loved fields of labor. From there they came to this place where her life has been known of all.

While suffering for many years from servious infirmities her final sickness was of brief duration and she endured her sufferings with patient resignation. Her last words were Blessed Jesus, Blessed Jesus, Precious Savior.
