Georgena (Schutz) Breakenridge

Georgena (Schutz) Breakenridge, 81, of Macksburg, passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital after many medical issues for the last seven years including numerous different cancers.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, July 25, 2022 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 26 at the Macksburg United Methodist Church in Macksburg. Burial will follow in the Moon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Macksburg United Methodist Church.

Georgena was the third child born to Faye & Edna Schutz in Winterset, Iowa on January 22, 1941. She graduated from Macksburg High School May 1959 and married her high school sweetheart, Ralph Breakenridge on June 7, 1959. Georgena and Ralph had four children, Randall, Kelly, Tracy, and Susan.

The first 16 years of their marriage, they lived on local farms until they moved to Macksburg in March 1975. Georgena started her own business, George’s Service in Macksburg. She began working at the Macksburg Post Office and would eventually retire as postmaster.

Many people know her association with the National Skillet Throw Competition in Macksburg, having been involved with the program since its inception. With her interest in the community, she helped create and maintain the Macksburg alumni record and annual banquet until it was discontinued last year. She also served as the sexton of the Grand River Township cemeteries for many decades.

She was a member of the Macksburg United Methodist Church, Macksburg Needle Craft Club, the former Macksburg Red Hat Society and the Rebekahs, an international service-oriented organization and branch of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

The Madison County Chamber of Commerce honored Georgena with the 1997 Citizen of the Year for her outstanding service to the people of Macksburg and Madison County.

Her hobbies included gardening, stamp collecting, coin collecting, collecting recipe books, and collecting local history and obituaries.

Georgena is survived by her husband, Ralph; children, Randall (Lynn), Tracy (Dennis) Faust, and Susan; 9 grandchildren, Jennifer (Breakenridge) Smith, Tara (Jared) McDonald, Jared (Kyle Coleman) Breakenridge, Kylee (Curtis) Barber, Jodi Faust, Becky (Jimi Davis) Faust, Jessica (Matthew) Conaway, Kelli McIlheran, and Erin McIlheran; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Merrill (Connie) Schutz and sister, Jean Brown.

Georgena was preceded in death by her parents, Faye and Edna Schutz; son, Kelly Wayne; and brother-in-law, Gail Brown.
