Elmore DeLoss McLaughlin, better known as Ed McLaughlin, died suddenly at his home in this city last Wednesday. He was stricken with paralysis while working in his garden Wednesday afternoon, and fell to the ground. Joseph A. Aldinger, who was passing, noticed him fall and ran in. He telephoned to O. F. McLaughlin, who came at once and medical aid was summoned. Ed never recovered consciousness and he died at 9 o’clock in the evening.
The burial will be today at 10 o’clock a. m., interment in the Paola cemetery. It will be under the direction of McCaslin Post, No. 117, G. A. R., and Reverend Fred Grey, of the Congregational church, will conduct the religious services.
Ed McLaughlin was well known in Paola and throughout Miami county. He came here over forty years ago and was for many years engaged in the grocery business. His brothers, Orlando F. McLaughlin and Frank J. McLaughlin, of this city; two daughters Nettie and Zillah, of Chicago, and J. Edwin, a son in California, were the family survivors.
E. D. McLaughlin was a soldier in the War of the Rebellion. He enlisted in Madison county, Iowa, in Company A of the 29th Volunteer infantry, on the 24th day of November, 1862. The regiment was mustered out or rather, the remnants of it were, after the close of the war. This regiment marched with Sherman to the sea. Ed received his honorable discharge at Clinton, Iowa, on the 3rd day of June, 1865. His record in war, as his record in peace, was true in every instance, honorable always in the line of duty.
His father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph T. McLaughlin, died in this county many years ago.
Beginning with the year of 1900, Ed became city clerk and he held the position until 1909. He lived alone in his little cottage in the east part of town and led a simple and quiet life.
Born on the 5th day of November, 1837, he was 72 years, 4 months and 4 days old when death came. He came of a strong and useful family, gave the best years of his active life in his country’s service, and today goes to the grave, over which may be truthfully inscribed: “Here lies a brave soldier and an honest man.”
