John “Tom” Reed

John “Tom” Reed, 87, of Winterset, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for a future designation.

John was born on September 12, 1934 to Walter and Lorraine (Silverthorn) Reed in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from Lorimor High School in 1954. Shortly after graduation, he married Helen Loomis at the Church of God in Lorimor on October 1, 1954. Over the years, John enjoyed driving school buses for the Winterset School District and building fences. John retired from John Deere after several years of delivering lawn tractors and parts.

In his free time, John would like to go camping or boating on one of his pontoon boats he had. He loved to watch old westerns on TV such as Gunsmoke or anything that had John Wayne. John was always a talker and if you ever ran into him in the community, you had better be prepared to stay awhile. As his kids and grandkids would say, “Grandpa’s got somebody in lockdown.”

Many people would say that John was ornery and a fantastic story teller. Maybe too good of one, as his tales got a little more exaggerated each time they were told. Many of his tales were about his family and how much they meant to him. He loved to brag about his grandkids and great grandkids. John was always thinking about others and was as selfless as they come. John loved his wife deeply, even up to his last day, he was more concerned about his wife, than himself.

John is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen; children, Teri (Mark) Leeper of Grimes, Shawn Scheeler of Winterset; Troy Reed of Antioch, CA, and Susie (David) Perkins of Lake Barrington, IL; grandchildren, Zach, Emy, Whitney, Andrew, and Lily; and great grandchildren, Maddox, Grady, Ryder, Oxton, Sadie, and Olive.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, John Thomas Reed Jr.; brother, Dick Reed; and sisters, Bobbie McNamara, and Sandy Jacobs.
