Robert Jesse McClelland

Robert Jesse McClelland was born on September 26, 1942 in rural New Virginia, Clarke County, Iowa to Robert Bruce & Cecil Clare (Schaffer) McClelland. He went from this life to be with his Lord and Savior on May 16, 2022. He was 79.

Bob attended school in New Virginia graduating in 1960 and then worked in Des Moines before joining the U.S. Marine Corps in 1961.

He and Virginia Porter of Truro were married in 1962 and moved to Santa Ana, California where Bob was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro for 4 years. He attended Orange Coast College and after obtaining his associates degree he went to work for JCPenney in San Diego. Bob retired from Penney’s in 1997 and moved his family back to Iowa in 1998.

He held various jobs after returning to Iowa. He was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church of St. Charles, as well as an active and serving member in several churches in San Diego. Bob loved to travel, listen to Southern Gospel Music and watch his sons and then later his grandsons play sports. He had a giving heart and gave of his time and possessions to strangers, neighbors, family and church.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Virginia of Truro; children Louisa (Greg) Bedwell of New Virginia, Rebecca (Alex) Toporovsky of Santee, CA, Robert (Theresa) McClelland of Des Moines, Mason (Molly) McClelland of Des Moines; grandchildren Kate (Douglas) Jones of Winterset, Valerie (Curt) Tenninson of Des Moines, Wesley Bedwell of New Virginia, Josephine and Adam Toporovsky of Santee, CA, Max Bedwell of New Virginia, Michael McClelland of Truro, Chase and Caden McClelland, Addison and Dylan Bennet of Des Moines, Noah Foote of Leon, and Xavier McClelland of Osceola; great-grandchildren William Robert and Clara Bea Jones of Winterset, his sister Ila Sherer of Mesa, Arizona and other family members and friends.

A memorial service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in St. Charles, IA on June 4th at 10:30am.
