Winterset, Iowa(Roy) Eugene Armstrong, 93, passed away peacefully at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center on Tuesday, February 22, 2022.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, March 6, 2022 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel.
Funeral Service will take place at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 7, 2022 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel. Burial will follow in the Union Chapel (Shambaugh) Cemetery in rural northeast Madison County. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Madison County Conservation Board or Spurgeon Manor for the excellent care they provided Eugene.
Eugene was born on September 26, 1928 at the home of his parents, John Lewis and Gladys Opal (Keesey) Armstrong, in rural Madison County, the fourth of seven children. He lived his entire life within a ten mile radius of his birthplace. He graduated from Van Meter High School in 1946 and began farming.
On March 5, 1950, Eugene was united in marriage to Eloise Roberta Peters. They enjoyed almost 72 years of marriage and raised four sons, Dennis (Patty Hammond), Tim (Teresa Reed), Neil, and Gale (Vicky Norton). He was the proud grandfather of five; Stacy (Rich) Rush, Jude (Shannon) Boucher, Jason (Dawn) Boucher, Jason (Candace) Armstrong, Jennifer Armstrong, and was a great grandfather to eight; Kinsey, Lorelai, Luke, Cameron, Haylee, Cayden, Phinnius, and Anna.
He was a life-long farmer and a proud steward of the land. Over the years he raised animals and an assortment of crops as well as performed custom harvesting for others in the community.
Additionally, he operated a repair business where he performed a vast assortment of mechanical repairs to the equipment of many others.
Eugene was an active member of the Van Meter community. He served as a commissioner on the Madison County Soil and Water Conservation District Board, sold Pioneer Seed Corn, served on the school board, was a member of the Badger Creek Watershed Club, served on the Madison County Conservation Board, and was a member of the Iowa Ornithologists and National Audubon Society.
We lost a great person. Eugene was a man who wore many hats. He was a husband, brother, father, uncle, friend, farmer, mechanic, hunter, fisherman, conservationist and a very avid ornithologist. After he retired he spent many hours traveling with Eloise all over North America from Hudson’s Bay to Belize, locating and identifying birds.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters and their spouses, Berneal (Grover) Edmiston, Phyllis (Don) Beaman, Eileen (Ray) Dershem, Joanne (Chuck Richardson), and Viola Marsh.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife; his sons and their families; a brother John (Linda Jones) Armstrong; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
