Bernard "Bernie" Frey
September 23, 1938 ~ January 23, 2022 (age 83)

Bernard “Bernie” Frey, 83, of Canyon Lake, passed away January 23, 2022, in New Braunfels, Texas. He was born September 23, 1938, in Osceola, Iowa, son of Earl B. Frey and Mary Alice Comp Frey. He grew up on a farm with his parents, and brothers, David and Jim. Growing up on the farm is where he developed his love for nature and animals. He was very proud of his organic garden where he grew lemon and olive trees, blackberries, tomatoes, and peppers.

Bernie joined the Iowa Air National Guard in 1956 after graduating from high school and served as an active-duty officer in the Air Force for over 30 years. He was very proud of his military service and his ashes will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery.

Bernie will be remembered for being a loving husband, father, grandfather, loyal friend, and man of strong faith. He was generous with his time to the church and charitable organizations that meant so much to him. He had the unique ability to make anyone he was with feel special, and he was quick with a smile. If you spent any time with him, you were likely to hear about his military service, his running pursuits, his gardening, and his grandchildren.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Judith Howard Frey; their initials can still be found carved into the famous covered bridge of Madison County, Iowa. Other family members include his brother Jim (wife Cheryl), daughter Cindy (husband Peter), daughter Heather (husband Scott), and son Aaron (wife Beth). He was especially proud of his grandchildren: Sahara, Laurel, Jackson, and Madison.

The family is appreciative of the love and support of his many friends. Donations in Bernie’s honor may be made to CRRC of Canyon Lake, SAMMinistries, or charity of your choice.
