Mary Welty Hart

Mary Welty Hart, 93, passed away on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at Azria Health in Winterset.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. Family will greet friends one hour prior, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church and the Madison County Historical Society.

Mary was born February 18, 1928 in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Retta (Peed) Enright of Crawford Township, Madison County, Iowa. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1945 and was married to Robert Welty in 1948 in Winterset. In 1949, she was employed as Deputy Recorder and was elected as Madison County Recorder in 1954, a position she held until her retirement in December 1990. In January 1991, she was married to Lyle Hart. They made their home in Winterset and Mesa, Arizona until his death in 2002.

Mary was a member of the Winterset First United Methodist Church, Women’s Circle, and Madison County Republicans. She was a lifetime member of the Winterset Public Library, WHS Alumni Association and Madison County Historical Society as well as past member of the board. She was also a member of the Madison County and Iowa Genealogical Societies. Her interests were in family, local genealogy, gardening and traveling.

She is survived by her stepchildren, Marcia (Dan) Tilley of Stillwater, OK, Lyle Hart, Jr. (Bette) of Raleigh, NC, Carol (Jim) Powell of Chandler, AZ, and Don Hart of Florida; six grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; two nieces, Gwen Kessler of West Liberty and Connie Meyer of Cedar Rapids; nephew, David Barnhart of Iowa City; several cousins, Laura Vasilion, Paul Melull, and Carla Marsh, all from the Chicago area.

Preceding her in death were her parents; both husbands; her brother, Robert Enright (a casualty of the Korean War), and a nephew, Dennis Barnhart.
