Michael J. Kelly

Michael J. Kelly, 81, of Afton, died Monday, September 27, 2021, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 4, 2021, at the Afton Methodist Church in Afton. Rev. Jim Morris will officiate the service. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery east of Afton.

Open visitation will be from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. Sunday, with family receiving friends from 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. Sunday at Powers Funeral Home in Afton.

Memorials are to the family to be determined.

Michael Jon Kelly, son of Charles Kelly and Florenz (Hardin) Kelly, was born on March 13, 1940, in Des Moines. He was educated in the Afton Community Schools and graduated from there with the class of 1958.

Michael was united in marriage to Nancy Lea Werner on September 11, 1960, in Tingley, Ia. Michael worked at Sheets Drug and then they settled in Afton where he worked at Commercial State Bank from 1958 until 1985. He served in many different roles including President. He later owned and operated MJ Kelly Realty. In 1985, they moved to Tulsa, Okla. where Michael attended Rhema Bible School which was ran by Kenneth Hagen Ministries. He served at an American Indian Methodist Church while residing in Oklahoma then relocated to Rockford, Ill where Michael was employed as an Associate Pastor. They moved to Mount Ayr to be closer to family and Michael worked as a truck driver. He continued as a truck driver through another move to Winterset in 2001, but also sold used cars for a short time.

Michael is survived by his wife Nancy of Winterset; daughters Julie Ingram and son Race Kelly both of Winterset; five grandchildren, Matt (Jordan) Ingram of Winterset, Drew (Natalie) Ingram of Waukee, Ashley (Eric) Chenoweth of Oskaloosa, Jonny Ingram of West Des Moines, and Jordan Ingram (Shantel Gonzalez-Love) of Van Meter; great-grandchildren, Kylie, Tyler, Trenton, Cadence, Braden, Abigail, Kamdyn, Harper, Huxlee, Asher and Quinton; brother Ronnie (Loretta) Kelly of Afton; along with other extended relatives and many friends.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Jan Kelly.
