SUDDEN DEATH

A Former Winterset Citizen Passes Away Sunday Evening

It is with sadness that we add to the chronicle of the events of this week the death of one of Winterset’s former residents, J. S. Wilson, of Athens, Ga. Mr. Wilson had been ill for some days with typhoid-malarial fever and letters and dispatches regarding his condition seemed to indicate that his illness was of a severe nature, but perhaps not fatal. A turn for the worse came, and his death occurred on Sunday, July 30th.

Mr. Wilson, about fifteen years ago, was the proprietor of the St. Nicholas Hotel in this city and became well known to the traveling public and the citizens of the town and county. He sold his interest in the hotel to M. A. Knight, but again took charge of the business in 1895, disposing of it again in the same year to W. H. Swafford.

After his marriage to Miss Phoebe Gump they moved to the South, and at the time of his death he had moved out of the hotel, although still running it and a grocery store besides.

He leaves besides his wife, three children by his first marriage, Mrs. W. J. Cornell, of this city, Mrs. Frank Sackett, of Carroll, Ia. and Howard Wilson, was in the U. S. Commissary Department.

Mr. Wilson’s death will be regretted by the many who have known him and his family for many years, where he was held in high esteem by his acquaintances who valued his friendship and good opinion.

The remains were buried on Thursday at West Liberty, Iowa, where he resided for many years. The Cornell family went to West Liberty on Tuesday to attend the funeral.
