COLUMBUS — Shirley Atkins, 63, of Columbus, died Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus with Rev. Bill Ritter officiating.
The family will be receiving friends at 10 a.m. Thursday until service time at the church. Interment will be at a later date.

The family would like you to join them for a time of food and fellowship at the American Legion immediately following the service.

Shirley was born June 29, 1946, in Central City to Jack Phillip and Donna Lou (Dothit) Dufoe. She was raised in Belgrade and graduated from Belgrade High with the Class of 1964. Shirley attended beauty school in Columbus. She was a licensed cosmetologist for many years, most recently as the owner of Hair by Friends, retiring in July, 2009.

Shirley was united in marriage with John Svoboda on June 24, 1966, in Fullerton. They had one child, Tammy Lynn. Shirley and John made their home in Columbus. John passed away on Dec. 2, 2004. Shirley married John M. Atkins on Sept. 20, 2008, in Plattsmouth. Shirley and John enjoyed traveling and had many fun outings in their time together. Shirley was a collector of antique furniture and dishes and enjoyed fine dining.

Shirley is survived by her husband, John Atkins of Columbus; daughter, Tammy (Todd) L. Hollatz Wilson of Edgar; grandson, SSgt. Steven L. Hollatz grandson, Cpl. Blu A. Wilson, USMC (Inactive Reserves) of Hays, Kan.; mother, Donna L. Hansen of Columbus; brother, Terry (Wilma) Dufoe of Fullerton; many nieces, nephews, and many, many, loving friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by her father, Jack Dufoe; and first husband, John Svoboda.

Shirley was a two-time cancer survivor and the family requests in lieu of flowers that memorials be directed to the Lance Armstrong Foundation
