Clarence E. Mitchell Suicides

Clarence E. Mitchell, a young man who eight or ten years ago was assistant bookkeeper at the Citizens National Bank, took his own life in Des Moines, Tuesday night. Mitchell was assistant bookkeeper for the Green Bay Lumber Co., in Des Moines and boarded with a private family. He went to bed Tuesday night locking the door and some time during the night shot himself through the heart with a revolver. He was found the next morning dead in bed.

Mitchell was about 32 years old and had accumulated considerable property, being worth probably $8,000. He came to Winterset about 1880 and was a peanut boy on the passenger trains between here and Des Moines. He was afterward taken into the bank and by its influence secured a better position a year or 2 afterward. He was rather quiet, and was considered somewhat queer by his friends here in Winterset. There is no known reason for his rash act.
