Floyd Dickerson

Floyd Dickerson, 97, of Winterset and formerly of Ottumwa, died on July 18, 2021 at MercyOne Hospital in Des Moines.

Floyd was born April 11, 1924 to John and Sarah Dickerson. He married Dorothy Murray in November 1947 and later married Mary Deloris (Dee) McDavitt in October 1978.

Floyd enlisted in the US Army when he was a senior at Ottumwa High School. He served in the European Theatre during WWII and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He received his honorary high school diploma later in life. He worked at Ottumwa Fire Department for 37 years and retired as Assistant Fire Chief.

Floyd was a member of Davis Street Christian Church in Ottumwa and later attended the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset. He was involved with the Winterset Legion Green Rogers Post 184 and Winterset VFW Post 8142.

He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe. He enjoyed his coffee group and listening to their stories and sharing his own.

Floyd is survived by his children Michael & Patty Dickerson, Craig & Cindy Dickerson, Michael & Margaret McDavitt, Stephen & Judy McDavitt, Mary Brown, Philip McDavitt, James & Mary Jo McDavitt, Martin & Carlita McDavitt, Teresa Peterson; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Glen Dickerson, Vonda Martin, Marguerite Wood, Lucille Bosworth, Aldonna Isaacson, Geraldine Laurich, Alice Farrington and Doris Dickerson; wives, Dorothy Dickerson and Mary Dickerson; grandson, Nathaniel McDavitt.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, August 14, 2021 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset. Prior to the service, a luncheon will be held beginning at noon for all the guests. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, August 21, 2021 at Shaul Cemetery in Ottumwa. Memorials may be made to Winterset Legion Green Rogers Post 184 and First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset.
