John Gregory Sheppard was born at Frome, Somershire, England, and died in Winterset, Iowa, October 3rd, 1890, the 97th anniversary of his birth.
He emigrated to the United States about sixty-five years ago and for two years lived at Boston, Mass., from there he removed to Steubenville, Ohio, where he resided about eighteen years and from there went to Sydney, Ohio, where his wife was buried in 1856. The last twenty-five years were spent in Winterset.
Mr. Sheppard was baptized in the parish of Frome, but never became a communicant in the church. He reverenced the Bible as the inspired word of God, and when able attended public worship. In private devotions he was very regular and was a daily reader of the Bible. He was extremely fond of little children and till enfeebled by age his delight was to have some one of his little great-grandchildren in his care.
Mrs. Dr. McCaughan, from whose home he was buried, was his only child, but he left also nine living grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grandchildren.
