Mary Jane (Jani) Heaivilin was born in Winterset, Iowa, on June 25, 1936, to Wayne B. and Ople Ryner Detrick.
She graduated from Winterset High School in 1954. She attended Simpson college where she pledged Pi Beta Phi sorority and earned a two-year teaching degree in 1956. She then taught kindergarten for the Indianola Community School District for seven years at Hawthorne and Emerson Elementary Schools. During this time, she attended summer school at Simpson and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1962.
In December of 1957, she married her husband of 63 years, M.D. (Doc) Heaivilin, after a whirlwind two and a half month courtship. She joined him in working at their clothing store Ce-Docs in 1963 managing the women’s apparel department for 13 years. During this time, two children became part of their lives: Heidi A. Heaivilin in 1964 and William W. Heaivilin in 1966.
She was active in church activities and community activities, and she loved being with her family. She touched the lives of many people and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Jani is survived by her husband, Doc Heaivilin, and son Bill (Pat Shaughnessy) of Las Vegas, Nevada, and her cousin, Dan Ryner of Winterset, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Heidi. Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Visitation will be one hour prior to services from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Cremation will follow services. Memorials may be given to Farmers Chapel United Methodist Church.
