Mrs. Jacob Gideon

The following obituary of Mrs. Jacob Gideon, who died at her home in Doniphan, Nebraska, is taken from the Doniphan Enterprize.

At the age of nearly 94 years grandma Gideon, wife of Jacob M. Gideon passed away at her home on Saturday evening, April 8, 1916, her death being due to old age. She leaves to mourn her loss and aged husband and three sons, James, Charles and Clark Gideon, all residing your Doniphan, her eldest son, William, having preceded her in death by little more than a year. Besides these she leaves ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Aurelia A. Stump was born near Circleville, Ohio, May 12, 1822. At an early age she, with her twin brother, were left orphans by the death of their parents, and were adopted by a family named Brotten, and later moved to near Springfield, Illinois, where she was married in 1849 to Jacob M. Gideon. Later they moved to Winterset, Iowa, where they made their home for more than 20 years, and in 1877 came to Nebraska, locating on the farm adjoining Doniphan where they have since resided.

They were well acquainted with Abraham Lincoln in Illinois, and often bought groceries of him when he was the proprietor of a small store near Springfield. Their lives recall many incidents of the hardships and privations of the pioneer days along the route from Ohio to Nebraska.

Although Grandma Gideon had been blind for more than fifty years, she was uncomplaining, and her cheerful disposition endeared her to relatives and friends alike, by all of whom she will be greatly missed and mourned.

The funeral service was conducted at the Congregational church on Tuesday, April 11th, by Rev. W. R. Pierce, after which the body was laid to rest in Cedar View cemetery, beside that of her twin brother, who died about 10 years ago. - Doniphan Enterprise
