Katherine Louisa Binns was born April 16, 1939 to Alfred and Emmagene Mary Louisa Gonseth Binns. She was the middle of three children, her siblings being Earl Binns and Maryann Garrison. She attended Winterset Community Schools and later graduated from East High School in Des Moines. Later in life, she continued her education at AIB. Katherine married Charles J. Herrick on August 14, 1955. They were the parents of two children, Bob and Susan.

Katherine worked for Northwestern Bell/US West. She started as an operator in Winterset, and finished her career in Des Moines. After retiring from the telephone company, she worked at Sack & Save, Trask Jewelry and Fons & Porter. Over the many years, she also enjoyed helping Charles on the farm.

She loved to quilt and spent many hours making quilts and wall hangings. She also liked crocheting, needlepoint and sewing, making many of her own and her children’s clothes. Some of her other hobbies were reading, painting, dancing and camping. Charles and Katherine wintered in Arizona for many years, and she taught others in her mobile home park how to quilt. Katherine was a Red Hat Lady during her time in Arizona. She also was a lifetime member of The Telephone Pioneers of America. Her time with her family was what she cherished most of all.

Katherine was preceded in death by her parents.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Charles, and her children, Bob (Julie) Herrick and Susan (Dave) McDonald; grandchildren Tye (Megan) Herrick, Tiffany (Nathan) Wheeldon, Renee (Steve) Schipper, Michael (Sally) McDonald and Kenny (Jill) McDonald; and great-grandchildren Christoper (Haley) Herrick, Alex Herrick, Nicholas Herrick, Abigail Herrick, Elijah Wheeldon, Isaiah Wheeldon, Owen Schipper, Colt Schipper and Vivienne McDonald; and her siblings, Earl Binns and Maryann Garrison. She will also be fondly remembered by numerous extended relatives and friends.
