December 2020Ronald M. Hughes was born on the family farm in Orient, Iowa on December 1, 1924 to Lyla and Ralph Hughes. He grew up in Iowa, joined the Navy and served during WWII as a Navy diver in a mine disposal unit. After leaving the Navy he met Carolyn Wright, and they were married on July 28, 1946. Ron worked for the phone company and they had 4 children, Terry, Michael, Jay and Cathy.
Ron and Carolyn later moved to Longmont, Colorado in retirement where they have resided for nearly 40 years.
Ron passed peacefully on December 28, 2020 of natural causes. Ron was preceded in death by his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Joy Hughes, his grandson, Cole Hughes, his parents Lyla and Ralph Hughes and his 2 brothers Keith and Larry Hughes.
Ron is survived by his loving wife of 74 years Carolyn Hughes, his son Terry Hughes and his wife Terry Kimball, his son Jay Hughes, his daughter Cathy Hughes, his grandchildren, Cindy Hosman and her husband Paul; Sabrina Tuttle and her husband Travis; Steven Hughes and his wife Jordyn; great-grandchildren Sean and wife Kylara, Alissa, Claire, Lylah, Haiden, Regyn, Jasper, Grayson and Pyper, and great-great-grandchildren Owen, Lukas and Myka.
Ron and Carolyn were long time members of the United Methodist Church in Longmont and memorial contributions may be sent there in his name. Longmont United Methodist Church, 350 11th Avenue, Longmont CO 80501.
Visitation will be at the Winterset Chapel on Sunday, January 3, 2021from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m. with funeral service and Military Honors to follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Winterset Chapel. Bural will be in the Winterset Cemetery.
