Excerpted from a letter written by Burniss E. Dick, serving in the U. S. Army in France during WWI.

Ed Wirth died in hospital from operation on his ear. He is the fellow that came to Winterset and enlisted the same time I did. He was Thomas Johnson’s adopted son.
