Gary Lee Scrivner was born on December 13th, 1956 to Gene and Joy (Downs) Scrivner in Winterset, IA.

He is survived by his wife, Julie of 20 years. Gary and Julie were united in marriage on May 1, 1999. He is also survived by his catalog daughter, Sarah Darr and her husband Chris and their daughters Hailey and Maci; his sister, Nancy Hinerichsen and her husband Denis and three nieces, two nephews and their children; his step-brother, Perry Johnson and his wife Ann and 2 nieces and their children; his step-sister, Kathleen Peterson and her husband Chuck, one niece, one nephew and their 2 kids; also, aunts, uncles, cousins and a lot of friends.

He is preceded in death by his dad Gene Scrivner, mother Joy Scrivner and step-mother Catherine Scrivner.

Gary graduated from Interstate-35 in 1975. As an adult he worked for Meadow Gold Cold Storage, Payless Lumber, M&M Cartage, LME, and from 2005 to 2020 he was employed as a city driver for 15 years at Fed Ex Freight in Ankeny.

As a child he was baptized and attended the Methodist Church. He then attended the Thrive church until his death. In July 2004 he was raised as a Master Mason and continued until his death.

In 1975 Gary joined the St. Charles Fire Department and served for 5 years. He then transferred to the Indianola Fire Department for 35 years from 1980-2015. In 2015 he transferred to the Hartford Fire Department where he served for 5 years until his death.

As a child he always wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a firefighter and truck driver. Gary never knew a stranger and was always willing to help someone out. He enjoyed the time he spent with his catalog daughter Sarah while she was growing up. After Sarah was married, Gary was excited to spend time with both of his granddaughters Hailey (who was always ready to go for a ride with him in the dump truck and push the button) and Maci (who he always called his 10/2 Baby.)

Family was always important, you didn’t need to be related by blood. He enjoyed his trains and there were several times he attempted to complete them and something always derailed them. The train room became the new play room for his granddaughters.

He enjoyed the time he spent at Cuttys Campground with his wife and granddaughters. It seemed like there was always a project that Grandpa had to help with especially, when they decorated for Christmas in July at the campground. They had big ideas for Grandpa to do for decorations. (They did get 1st place 2 years in a row.) Later on after the girls were older and one graduated he still spent the summers there with his wife and they would go on golf cart rides and talk to the many friends they had met over the years.

He collected many items from tractors to fire department collectables and items. He also liked to watch the Green Bean (Bay) Packers and had several items to display his love. He loved the time spent on Monday nights at the fire department, everything waited on that day.

Gary enjoyed the time spent with a fellow firefighter. They put thousands of miles on their cars driving around eating McChickens and shooting the bull on Sunday nights. Zach would always tease Gary about that he was in his wedding, even though he didn’t invite him to his…..

Public visitation will be held 3 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at Overton Funeral Home with family present from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Hartford Fire Department or Thrive Church in Indianola.
