Edward Abbott, 96, of Afton died Thursday, March 26, 2020 at EveryStep Greater Regional Hospice House in Creston. No public Services are planned. Private burial will be held at a later date at Graceland Cemetery in Creston. Memorials may be given to the Afton Fire Department.
Edward Wayne Abbott was born March 18, 1924 in Adair County, IA to Edward Bryson Abbott and Mayme Irene (Bussard). He graduated from Arispe High School. On September 1, 1948, Ed was united in marriage to Marie Spurr Chaney in Winterset, IA.
Ed worked at John Deere Implement and later Union County Roads, where he ran a maintainer and was a heavy equipment operator for over 25 years. After retiring in 1989, Ed ran a laundromat with his wife Marie and worked in maintenance at Fairview Housing in Afton.
Ed never met a stranger and enjoyed riding his scooter around Afton striking up conversations with anyone he met. He took a lot of pride in his yard work and tended to his garden, canning the many vegetables he grew. Ed also had a great eye and talent for art. He painted many pieces varying from canvas to saw blades. He was a former member of the Methodist Church in Afton.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews including locally Sue (Bob) Roberts of Afton and Judy (John) Clayton of Cromwell; sister-in-law Mary McKinney of Zion; many great nieces; great nephews; other extended relatives and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marie, brothers, Lloyd, Emery, John, Bob and Bill, his sisters Mary Lou Graham, Helen Davis and Dorothy Abbott.
