Lucinda Chase was born near Indianapolis, Indiana, February 28, 1837, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Chase. She was the ninth child of a family of twelve children and was the last of her family.
She came to Iowa at the age of nine years with her parents, making the trip by wagon and taking several weeks in which to make the journey. The Chase family first settled in Des Moines later moving to Winterset, Iowa, which was the family home for many years.
When a girl, Miss Chase united with the Methodist Episcopal church and had been a member ever since. She was united in marriage to Joseph Stickler, March 12, 1857. To this union were born to daughters, Mary E. Oaks, who died September 19, 1915, at her home in Adair, and Lida, who passed away in infancy, her husband dying soon afterward.
On October 16, 1904, Mrs. Stickler was united in marriage to W. N. Morgan, of Adair, who died in 1914. After the death of her husband, she spent the remaining years of her life among her relatives and friends, making her home with her grandson, Cap Oaks, of Adair during the winter and with Arthur, of Valley Junction, through the summer, at whose home she passed away August third.
Her remaining relatives are two grandsons, seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and her son-in-law, Stephen Oaks, of Canada and several nieces and nephews.
The remains were taken to Adair Wednesday morning, August 5, and funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church in the afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. M. J. Rarick. Interment was made in Sunny Hill Cemetery.
